Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Cannon & Cannon website! Here are some of the most commonly asked questions. We hope that this section will help you understand the way the auctions and the website work - allowing you the opportunity to make the most of this facility.

How is the auction decided?

The monthly Cannon & Cannon antique auction consists of two parts. First is the online portion of the auction which allows enthusiasts from across the world the opportunity to view and bid on the items available that month. The online portion of the auction ends the day before the physical auction.

The physical auction decides who the successful bidder will be. All of the bids for each item - received either by phone, email or through the website - are collected and these bids are made "by proxy" at the physical auction on behalf of the bidders. As always, the person with the highest bid wins.

Important to note: Just because you have placed the highest bid online does not mean that you will win the bid at the physical auction. Please read the next section to better understand how to use the online bidding facility.

What amount should I bid?

The bid you place through the site should represent the highest amount you would be prepared to bid if you were at the physical auction yourself. It does not represent the amount that you will pay for the item.

For example:

  1. You decide to place a bid of R2000.00 on an item. You are shown to be the highest online bidder.
  2. On the day of the auction, the bidding increases to R1200.00 but there are no further bids. The item will be sold at R1200.00 to you (as the highest bidder).

The opposite scenario also applies:

  1. You decide to place a bid of R2000.00 on an item. You are shown to be the highest online bidder.
  2. On the day of the auction, the bidding increases to R2200.00. You are not the highest bidder and the item is sold to your competitor.

How do I bid?

Before you can start bidding, you need to create a site account. This requires that you confirm your email address. The website provides you with several bidding and tracking options:

  1. You can place an immediate, confirmed bid. This bid will be considered during the physical auction. You can view your confirmed bids from the navigation on the left of the auction viewer.
  2. You can add items to your bid basket and review and confirm/confirm all from there. Items in your bid basket are not confirmed. You can access your bid basket from the navigation on the left of the auction viewer.
  3. You can track items that interest you. Tracking an item does not place a bid. You can review the items you are tracking from the navigation on the left of the auction viewer.
